Potosí
At an altitude of 4090 meters (over 13 thousand feet) above the sea level, Potosi is one of the highest cities in the world and one of the most historically rich cities in Bolivia.
The city lies at the foot of “Cerro Rico” a mountain popularly conceived as being “made of” silver, having been the major supply of silver for Spain during the period of the New World Spanish Empire.
In 1987, Potosi was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage site: the city has in fact stayed intact throughout the centuries, not only in its architecture, but also in the presence of its original cultures and ethnicities. Enhance Travel designed a Potosi city tour in order to provide you with an ample opportunity to discover the amazing wonders and the cultural heritage offered by this unique city, visiting its most iconic sites.
ITINERARY
The tour starts either at 8:30am or 1:45pm depending on your preference and has an approximate duration of 4 hours.
We will then take you on a private transportation to the entrance of one of the most incredible mines of Cerro Rico. Here, we will visit the Miners’ Market, where we can better understand the miners’ work and see their tools: dynamite, coca leaves, lamps, etc. Afterwards, we will walk through the refinement plant and stop at a viewpoint where we will enjoy the magical landscape of Cerro Rico.
Finally, we will then provide you with all the necessary equipment to ensure your safety, and then walk you through the scavenges where you will be able to observe the mystical interior world of the mine. We will then be able to witness the rituals performed by the miners and learn about El Tío, a divinity receiving offerings as coca leaves, alcohol and tobacco in exchange of his blessings to extract the minerals –observing thus beliefs that have been staying alive since ancient times. After visiting the interior of the mine, we will come back to the center of Potosi.
