The Death Road is one of the most unique activities Bolivia has to offer. Where else in the world can you cycle from snow-covered Andean Mountains all the way down to the entrance of the amazon jungle in a just a few hours? Internationally known for being the highlight of one’s trip when in South America, this exciting bike ride exposes some of Bolivia’s most breath-taking landscapes, beautiful mountains and sparkling waterfalls.
From La Paz, the road climbs to around 4700 meters above sea level (over 15 thousand feet) at La Cumbre –in the Altiplano highlands- before descending to 1300 meters (4 thousand feet) to the Yungas, allowing travelers to experience an incredible change in both temperature and landscapes.
We pride ourselves on providing the best in security, professionalism and fun on death road. Our service includes safe vehicles, best-quality equipment and bikes, highly skilled English-speaking tour guides –1 every 5 passengers, trained in Advanced First Aid, Mechanics and Rope Rescue- and fast contingency plans in place for any occurrence. From the Andes to the Jungle, we designed a package that will allow you to experience this incredible adrenaline-pumping activity in total security, while guaranteeing an incomparable life experience.
ITINERARY
The tour starts when your tour guide will come pick you up directly from your accommodation in the center. We will then drive to Workshop of the company where you will enjoy the breakfast and at the same time you will choose your equipment according your size. Then we travel around 45 minutes to arrive to La Cumbre where you will be given your bikes and equipment, as well as all instructions to follow during the day.
Once you feel comfortable with the bike, we will start our descent: the first part of the ride will last approximately 45 minutes and will be on an asphalt road. We will then hop on our vehicle for a short ride to Cotapata, where we will enjoy a break and a second snack. Here we will start the most adventurous part of the ride, as the road becomes more narrow and unpaved, surrounded by vegetation and with small waterfalls pouring down the cliffs. This second part of the descent lasts around 3 hours, including several breaks to rest and one last stop for an energetic snack.
At all times our tour guides will make sure you are comfortable with the pace; check that your bike and equipment are in the best conditions; and ensure you have ample opportunities to relax and enjoy the views. Unlimited drinking water will be provided throughout the entire tour, and our support vehicle will be following the group closely so that you may hop on and off as many times you need. Also, keep in mind that the temperature will raise as we move towards the Yungas: we thus suggest you dress in layers and leave your extra clothes in the vehicle during the stops.
While we offer helmets with the go-pro support and you are welcome to bring your own camera, you don’t have to worry about taking photos and videos during the ride: in fact, as a complimentary service, your tour guides will also take pictures of you and your group in all the iconic locations.
Finally, upon our arrival at the end of the road, you will be given a free survivor T-shirt and taken to our partner hotel, where we will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Here we will have a couple of hours to take a refreshing jump in the swimming pool and enjoy hot showers, before continuing our journey on vehicle back to La Paz (approx. 3 hours’ drive). We will drop you off directly at your accommodations between 7.15 P.M. and 8 P.M.
